History
Also spelled Mallika, an Indian hybrid between Neelum (mother) and Dasheri (father), developed at what is now the Central Institute of Subtropical Horticulture in Lucknow and released around 1971. The name comes from the Sanskrit word for "queen."
Taste profile
Exceptionally sweet and aromatic, fiberless flesh with prominent citrus, melon, and honey notes - well received internationally, including at Fairchild's International Mango Festival.
Growing habits
Grafted trees stay a manageable size, suited to dooryard growing. Notably a regular annual bearer, unlike many traditional Indian mango varieties that alternate between heavy and light years. Mid-season, June to July.
Shipping
Ships reasonably well. Known for an unusually long shelf life among fiberless mangoes - reportedly holding well for up to a week once ripe.
