Kesar
History
Originated in 1931 in the Junagadh district of Gujarat, India, at the foothills of the Girnar mountains. Its name comes from the Nawab of Junagadh, who reportedly remarked on the mango's saffron-colored flesh - "kesar" means saffron in Hindi and Gujarati. Gir Kesar now holds a Geographical Indication tag in India.
Taste profile
Smooth, nearly fiberless, deep saffron-orange flesh with an intensely sweet, perfumed flavor - often ranked just behind Alphonso among India's most prized mangoes.
Growing habits
Medium-sized, moderately productive tree. Mid-season, typically ripening in early-to-mid summer. Like most Indian-type mangoes, it flowers best after a cool, dry period.
