History
Developed in the 1920s-30s by Edward Simmonds, head of the USDA's Plant Introduction Station in Miami, as part of a breeding program crossing Indian-type mangoes like Haden with Southeast Asian types like Carabao to combine strong flavor and color with better disease resistance. It later became a parent to other Florida cultivars, including Duncan and Young.
Taste profile
Widely considered among the best-tasting Florida mangoes - fiberless, sweet, and aromatic, with golden-yellow skin and a reddish blush.
Growing habits
A vigorous, large tree with good anthracnose resistance, but historically an inconsistent producer, which kept it from becoming a major commercial variety despite the flavor. Still a favorite as a dooryard tree. Early-to-mid-season, typically ripening May through July.
